Professor Tom Cox CBE, former Head of the Institute, has returned to his academic duties after his research sabbatical.

During his sabbatical,he set up a personal work blog and diary. This not only keeps those who are interested up-to-date with his research and professional activities but also offers a resource in occupational health psychology and management. It incorporates the earlier OHP Review and is replacing this blog in many respects. The blog also offers a summary of recent tweets on Professor Cox’s twitter account: @occhealthnews.

A return to past glories:

The Centre for Organisational Health & Development (COHD) has been re established within the Institute, and as part of the School of Community Health Sciences, to provide a platform for teaching and research in three key areas: occupational health psychology, management and policy, health and safety psychology and management and organizational development and healthiness. This has been agreed with the University under the Institute’s School Plan 2010 2011 and with the agreement of the Institute’s Executive and the wider School of Community Health Sciences. This move also has the support of key members of the Institute’s Advisory Board.

The COHD has now been designated by the WHO as a Collaborating Centre in Occupational Health with this designation being moved away from the Institute. The COHD now continues the WHO Programme of Work under the leadership of Dr Stavroula Leka and professor Tom Cox.

Background: The COHD was the fore runner to the Institute in the then Department of Psychology. It was established in 1988 from the merger of the Stress Research Group, founded much earlier in 1973, with the Employment Strategies Research Group. It was designated a Collaborating Centre in Occupational Health by the World Health Organisation (WHO) in the early 1990s and was one of the institutions first involved in the Topic Centre programme of the European Agency for Safety & Health at Work (EU-OSHA) (Bilbao). The connections with both the WHO and EU-OSHA were transferred to the Institute when it was founded in January 1999 and have been successfully maintained since then. The research funding, productivity and esteem originally associated with COHD have contributed very positively to a good overall performance in the last three RAEs. Its teaching and the training of postgraduate researchers that it has provided have also made important contributions to the Institute’s education portfolio.
