Institute of Work, Health & Organisations

An International School of Applied Psychology

University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus

The Institute is a truly international project and a tangible expression of its internationalisation is its presence on the University’s Malaysian campus (UNMC). There it is one of the four schools that make up the Faculty of Social Sciences and Education. The other schools are: the Nottingham Business School, the School of Education and the School of Law. Established in 2002, it offered the first portfolio of modules and degrees in psychology to students at UNMC. The Institute at UNMC is on the Semenyih campus and is located in the newly refurbished Orange Building.

Management

In September 2008, Dr Angeli Santos will move to UNMC, on a three year secondment, to take up a post as the Institute’s Director of Studies there. Dr Santos will have local responsibility for the operation and success of the Institute in UNMC. Locally, she will report to Professor Ian Pashby, who is responsible for the management of UNMC, and, through the Institute, she will report to Professor Tom Cox in his roles as Head of School and as Chair of the Internationalisation Committee. Our UNMC operation is an integral part of the University of Nottingham and of the Institute itself: its teaching and research are therefore subject to the same requirements, management and direction as are the teaching and research in Nottingham. The UNMC taught programmes report to the Institute through the Director of Teaching (Dr Sara Cox), the Chief Assessment Officer (Dr Phil Leather) and Teaching, Learning & Assessment Committee. Research at UNMC reports to the Director of Research (Professor Amanda Griffiths) and Research Committee. Dr Santos will be playing a central role in ensuring the integration of our UNMC operation with the Institute at Nottingham.

Staff

Dr Santos will join the Institute’s existing staff in UNMC: Dr Hazel Ramos, Assistant Professor in Industrial and Organisational Psychology, Ms Maria Regina de Garcia, Assistant Professor in Applied Developmental Psychology, and Ms Huong Mei Law, the Institute’s Administrator for its postgraduate programmes. The Faculty manages the administration of the Institute’s undergraduate programme. That team is headed up by Ms Chong Wan Leong. There is currently a vacancy for a third academic member of staff: applications are welcomed and under ongoing review.

The resident UNMC team is supported by academic and research staff from the Institute in Nottingham, in particular, Professor John Richards who is Director of the MSc in Management Psychology. This degree is offered both in Nottingham and at UNMC.

Teaching

The Institute in UNMC offers an undergraduate BSc in Applied Psychology and Management Studies, postgraduate Masters (MSc) in Management Psychology and in Occupational Health and Safety Leadership, and, recently, a PhD in Applied Psychology. At present, there are more than 50 students taking modules or courses through the Institute in UNMC. The Institute hopes to announce a new programme of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees for2009 2010.

Research

The University has committed to ensuring that UNMC is research active and the Institute shares that commitment. In the coming years, there will be an increased emphasis on the development of research programmes at UNMC. For the Institute, these may reflect three overlapping strategies: the internationalisation of the Institute’s current research activities, say for example through its involvement with the World Health Organisation, the development of new research interests of local relevance, and the promotion of cross cultural research between Europe and South east Asia. Subject to approval by the Malaysian govenment, the Institute should be offering a PhD in Applied psychology from 2009 2010.

Internationalisation Committee

The Internationalisation Committee (Nottingham) is chaired by Professor Tom Cox. Dr Stavroula Leka is its Deputy Chair. The committee also involves: Dr Neil Coulson (Deputy Head of School), Professor Amanda Griffiths, Professor John Richards, Professor Kevin Browne Dr Angeli Santos and Dr Maria Karanika-Murray. Among other things, the committee is responsible for the managed growth of the UNMC project, the development of the Institute’s China Strategy, its involvement with the World Health Organisation, through the Collaborating Centres programme and its work for the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work.
